Text Klankwijzer:
Compagno is a musical tribute to conductor Jan Maat, in honor of his retirement after more than four decades of dedication to the music associations Nooit Gedacht from Windesheim and Concordia from Elburg. The title *Compagno* carries a deeper meaning. The Italian word for "companion" (compagno) not only reflects Jan Maat's name but also emphasizes the sense of camaraderie and cooperation. Jan's influence extends beyond notes and scores; he taught the musicians of both associations the value of collaboration, dedication, and friendship.
MUSICAL JOURNEYS
The name Windesheim, home of Music Association Nooit Gedacht, refers to a "heim" (residence) by a "winde" (bend in a watercourse or road). This place name symbolizes the musical journeys the orchestra has undertaken with Jan Maat. The composition not only celebrates the history of the historic Hanseatic city of Elburg, the home of Concordia, but also the distinctive fanfare sound of the Northern Veluwe.
TRIBUTE
The composition intertwines themes of farewell, gratitude, and tribute, expressed through various musical themes. Slower passages symbolize gratitude, while faster and grander passages mark the farewell and tribute. Central to the piece is the chorale *Eventide*, which returns in various ways and serves as the foundation of the composition. These variations symbolize the many beautiful musical moments both orchestras have shared with their conductor. Arend Gerds has also incorporated personal anecdotes and symbolic elements into the composition. For example, Psalm 150 resonates in measure 17 as a song of praise and celebration, while the "con fuoco" in measure 69 reflects the dynamic and fiery nature of their shared musical journey. Notably, the gong, which did not sound during the competition, now strikes in measure 4.
