The project ‘Hemellichamen’ will soon commence. This unique and innovative project combines a fanfare band with live electronics in a newly composed musical experience inspired by the sounds of the cosmos. The composition revolves around the theme of celestial bodies and incorporates sound recordings from NASA, known as the NASA Voyager Space Sounds. These recordings consist of electromagnetic radiation from space, which has been converted into intriguing sounds by the Voyager space probes.
The concept behind the composition is as follows: in space, there is no sound as we know it, since there is no air or atmosphere to carry sound waves. However, this “silence” becomes audible by converting electromagnetic radiation into sound waves that we can perceive. This remarkable transformation forms the core of the work.

The composition will establish a dynamic interaction between three types of sounds: the authentic sounds from NASA recordings, the acoustic sound of the brass band, and an entirely new dimension of sound in which the brass band’s tones are transformed and manipulated in real time. This exciting fusion explores the boundaries between the natural, the technological, and the cosmic.

The world premiere of ‘Hemellichamen’ is scheduled for the fall of 2025 and will be performed by the brass band Oranje Grootegast. This project has been made possible with the support of the Performing Arts Fund.
