In April 1945, 116 women were imprisoned in Camp Westerbork, ranging in age from 17 to 72. They had been arrested due to their (alleged) resistance activities or those of their family members. As the liberators approached, the German guards began to feel the pressure. They decided to use the 116 women as human shields. To avoid drawing attention, they planned to travel at night, and over 200 armed soldiers took the prisoners with them. The women had no idea where they were being taken and feared for their lives.
After three nights of traveling through Peelo, Groningen, and Aduard, the women finally arrived in Visvliet, where they were unexpectedly released with the words: “Sie sind allen entlassen!” (You are all released!).
Now, 80 years later, this journey will be retraced on April 11, 12, and 13. On March 27, CMV Excelsior is organizing a special tribute to the women of De Vrouwenmars (The Women’s March). This powerful evening will be dedicated to The Women’s March 2025, during which, exactly 80 years later, a group of women will once again walk from Westerbork to Grijpskerk to honor and remember the 116 women.
During the concert, two specially composed pieces of music will premiere. These remarkable and moving compositions—“Blessed with Grace and Mercy” by Sijtze van der Hoek and “For the Time Being” by Arend Gerds—will be performed for the first time. Additionally, Gert Sennema and his band Westkantstad will perform the song “Noakte nacht”. Several speakers, including representatives from Stichting Vrouwenmars, will share insights, and excerpts from diaries will be read to provide a deeper understanding of the events that unfolded 80 years ago. Mayor Ard van der Tuuk will officially open the Kick-Off concert.
Doors open at 19:30, concert starts at 20:00. Tickets are free but must be reserved in advance. Visit Excelsior’s website for more information.
