The composition "Monolith" was commissioned by NEW MUSIC NOW Files and is inspired by the Groninger Forum: its architecture and how this building takes position in the center of the city of Groningen.The design and characteristics of this building formed, in a translation into musical material, the starting point of the compositional process. For example, think of how the Forum regarding design and spatiality (also in the building) can have meaning musically, and also how the perspective from (and of) the building is on the city of Groningen.The blueprint of the building, as an example, was used to create a specific tone set and form plan. In addition, the perspective of and from the building has been integrated through the use of "old" sounds in the form of choral-like music and new sounds in the form of energetic musical gestures, which through alternation and also collisions/morphing serve as a metaphor for how this building takes up a position in the city of Groningen.The subject of spatiality also plays a role within the composition. By using improvisational/aleational principles, where players project sound from different positions, spatiality is created both within the musical material itself and also in the space itself in how sound is projected.
